ALIEN COVENANT

film

For Alien Covenant I worked mainly in the Set-Dec Dept. under the direction of Victor J. Zolfo, and occasionally Production Designer, Chris Seagers.

A fair bit of work was done remotely from my home studio, however I did spend a few months in Sydney’s Fox Studios, Art department. Where I was able to experience this film in full production. The giant sets and creature department were amazing to visit. Here are a few selected concepts from my time working on this project. Definitely a dream come true to work on such a seminal and influential franchise alongside such talented artists.

Covenant – Main Console : The main console for the Covenant Bridge went through many iterations. This is one of the final designs. A huge technical undertaking for Set-Dec!

Covenant – Bridge Table: The central table went through a number of changes in shape and style. Too many of which to add here.

Terra-forming Bay – Truck : The initial design and model for this truck were created by Tony Drew .I painted over the model in Photoshop. Here is one of many color/texture passes.

Embryo Drawers : Steve Burg created an initial concept for these drawers, which I then explored further. We came up with an idea to use clear vacuum plastic ‘egg crate’ style trays, which lift out. Originally, the trays would stack 3 layers deep, so I created a system which would enable David to lift out sections using a small locking tool.

covenant_37
The Cryo pods were designed by Steve Burg. I took this initial design and explored a few slightly different directions. All within keeping with Burgs original design. While most of these variations were un-used, the Black bordered window was chosen as an addition.

covenant_40
I then Proceeded to illustrate a detailed version of the exterior, along with working out handles, decals, vents etc.

covenant_38
The Pods interior had not been fully realized, so I did a number of possible layouts for the upholstery.

covenant_39
A design was chosen which I worked up a little more with a few basic orthographic passes. The concept was then passed onto Tony Drew, who took the designs into 3D and worked the shapes out further.

Both the Covenant and Lander Bridges were fitted with chairs that were re-purposed from Ridley Scott’s recent Martian film. I took photos of the chairs, cleaned them up and illustrated a number of possible directions. The chairs were heavily stripped back to the basic framework, then re-upholstered.

covenant_2
I was tasked with coming up with some sort of joystick which could move with the chair, as they were currently on a rotating base. The other option was to have the joystick slide out from under the console.

covenant_1
One of the possible directions for the chair re-fitting. These early designs would simply use a retro-fitted cowling which slides over the existing chair.

covenant_32
The Lander’s Ammo Hold. Faris panics and mistakenly shoots the ammo cabinet causing it to explode. Because of this, Ridley wanted the cabinet to really look volatile and explosive. I created many different looks for the cabinet, but in the end a simple set of orange doors were settled on. This was a visual nod the the doors in the original Alien Film. Here are a few designs. The cargo area which the Ammo Cabinet is situated, was created by Steve Burg.

Med Bay Table : Steve Burg created the Med Bay interior initial concept models. I designed a number of different table ideas. One of my designs which resembled the original Alien films table was chosen.
